I was so excited to find these video's as I was surfing the net recently! I was excited to see that there were step by step instructional videos out there you can still find, on many of these things that are becoming a lost art. In this day in age less people are canning their own foods, growing their own gardens, many people dont even know how to do basic sewing repairs, and I think it is a shame.
Franklin Springs kindly sent me the Homestead - Blessings DVD collection to review, and they were even generous enough to allow me to give away a video per review! So you can learn all of these great skills too!
I really enjoyed the DVD's because the West family are real homesteaders, if you aren't familiar with Homesteading it can be broadly defined,as a lifestyle of simple, agrarian self sufficiency. I guess maybe a bit comparable to the way the Amish live. In this day and age I love this concept! It may be easier to run to the store to pick up this or that, and food is very cheap in the United States, compared to other parts of the world, but do you really know what is in our "prepared & processed" foods? I don't know about you but being a Mother of 4 I love knowing I am serving my children a healthy meal, or that I have the ability to make them a warm quilt for those cold winter months....yeah me. Imagine that! Some people may say they don't have the time or why bother, but I honestly feel like these are wonderful life skills, that I myself want to learn, and I would love to be able to teach my own children as well!
One fun thing about the DVDs is that the ladies take turns hosting sections. For instance, one will show how to make basic bread, then someone else will take over to make pizza sticks, and so on. It’s neat to watch them working together as a family, and yet feel like you’re getting to know them each as individuals.
Onto the 1st dvd I reviewed: The Art of Quilting
As a beginner, and being extremely intimidated by the mere thought of quilting, I was excited, and yet a little apprehensive to watch this video. I initially just sat down and watched the video all the way through the first time, and I was very at ease, and even hopeful about my ability to be able to do this! I found that it was very basic, which was WONDERFUL, because I knew nothing! I liked The West Ladies, and their personalities, I loved the way they worked peacefully together, and how kind they were to one another. The make this DVD very easy to understand, and after watching I was not afraid to try anymore.
The second time I watched it, I paused the video many times, I had some scrap fabric laying around, enough to work with, and try out my newly acquired skills. My sewing machine isn't nearly as cool as the vintage one they used in the video, but it did work just fine! I cut out my material, and layed it out in the pattern I wanted it, then I sewed it block to block, and then sewed my pieces together. This was all so much easier than I thought it was going to be!
Here is my little patch worked piece :
Now my friend Heather also loves to quilt, the only previous experience she had was watching a 1/2 hour show on PBS, I gave her Homestead - Blessings- Art of Quilting video and she loved it, she said she picked up new techniques, and learned a lot more about quilting, and look at what she made... within 24 hours of watching the video mind you! Pretty awesome huh!
I think this is pretty impressive for a 1st time quilt!
